The Digital Photography Exhibits Guestbook
I greatly enjoyed thie exhibits, especially the works of Jim Brey, diana Gibson, Richard von Hoesel and Lisa Johnstone. My favorite though, was Ching-Fang Chiang's "Run Away Before Sunset." Very spooky and reminiscent of...oh, hell, now I can't remember the name of the painting. It shows a girl with a hoop running down a deserted street with elongated and ominous shadows around her. I feel like a putz. In any case, nice work from a forgetful art appreciator. I look forward to viewing more exhibits in the future.
Peace.

After several weeks of fooling around trying to get Trumpet Winsock and Netscape to run on my computer
a miracle happened -- a very bright UC Davis student helped me configure everything and VIOLA -- THE internet.
Your exhibit is nearly the first site I've perused. What a pleasure! Keep up the good work!

I want to tell you that the pictures in your
gallery are very beautiful and with a very good
tecnich.
Please excuse my english, I'm from Chile and
speak a little of english, but I wanted to tell
you my comments about your pictures.

This is beautiful. I would love to have it in my home.

nice, its up, it works, i just wish the photos had more room than this box im supposed to make comments in...esp the nicer ones, its very frustrating to view these at postage size reductions....then again, fox talbots plates were a little bit unsharp... morespacelesspage....if only the photos could scroll...

Very interesting- we are professional digital illustrators- there are some well done pieces here. Can't wait for a faster interface for us masses- then this type of exhibit will allow for bigger images and even more enjoyable viewingThanks

In viewing a lot of work upon the net, it is pleasent to see some varied and interesting work. Particular interest was sparked with DIANE FENSTER's "Circumstantial Evidence".

I think that it is really interesting to come onto a computer and be able to see an exhibit like this one. I really enjoyed it. Some of the photographs were definitely interesting.

A photoshop photographer myself, this is probably my favorite web site. I like to enlarge some of the images and to read the artists statements. It's too bad everyone doesn't have a homepage, as Ms. Fenster does.

I find Dena Eber's interpretations very absorbing and delightful. Pain is a lingering emotion that will stay a long time, but will subside in 5 years

This is a wonderful exhibit.
I am Editor in chief for Design at Macmillan Publishing.
We are developing a book entitled, 3The Museum Book of Digital Fine Art2.
This will be an Adobe Press title, and will be a beautiful, oversize gallery book containing the
work of hundreds of artists.
The author is Pat Johnson, and I would like to invite submissions from artists
who have exhibited here, and artists who view this exhibit.

The use of computers in art has made it both possable to see the work of artist in differant parts of the country but also seperates the viewer from the art.
While it can wet the appetite of the viewer I still can't get truly into the art and craft of the artist. From what I can see from my computer there are some wonderful pieces here but the computer will never replace the print.

Special congratulations to Michael Berger for his impressionist picture.

Wow this stuff is great. I went to the Navy Pier Art Show in Chicago and didn't find any computer art work on display. IUm an illustrator and am just begining to display my stuff locally. I'll be looking around on line to see if I can find other ways to display my art.

Bradley U., I'm impressed! Your gallery reflects good taste of global proportions. Peoria can be proud of Bradley and all of the art contributors. The internet-bashers in the general American media should take note and report something as positive as your work for a change! With best regards,

On many levels, this site shows some of what the best of the world
wide web can be. Not only is the art intriguing and well done, the
concept of virtual galleries and its future in our interconnected
future is brought home (literally!). An extremely well-done site
-- my compliments to the author, as well as to the many artists whose
work appears on these "walls." Not to be overlooked are the links
to some of the wonderful home pages (everyone should check out
Celeste Brignac's expanded gallery of images at her own site, for
example). Most gallery exhibitions demand that an artist submit
their artist statement during jurying, but few ever post them
for visitors to read. I enjoyed that aspect as well. Best of
luck with all future endeavors of this type!

los felicito por esta obra. Me gusto mucho.

Samantha Chards work is intersting. Your shows would be more intersting if you focused on a few images from the same people instead of only showing one or two pictures from each person. Some of the work is mediocre. You shold be more selective and make like a gallery setting. How about a computer installation. I wonder what that would cconsist of?

The semetry of the three women

the pose the pictures in the
second room after famous

genaric?
-- Mark Warmus <worm@airmail.net>
I found the images sampled ("Aspen," "Crystal Lady," "Hot Springs Revisited,") stimulating, in their use of color and/or shape. The image of a Scotland meadow was particularly haunting, the title escapes me. Thank you for providing a forum for new dimensions in photography.
-- Mark A. Utrecht <Mark.A.Utrecht@Commerce.State.Mi.Us>
Where are the artists doing
non-figurative work? Many of
the pieces seem to have a
neo-surrealist bent. Although
I somewhat (not totally)
appreciate the need to
copyright one's work, however
the intrusive signature and
copyright at the bottom of
each image turns them into
commoditized advertisements.
The last image (John Brooks
Gray) was the one that
worked best. Congratulations
to the artist. It was really
lovely.

Yes, modern art! Think of all the media we have and what we can create nith it for wjatever reason - reflection of society or modern interpretatiopns of the world to be restored for centuries onward. Each must make a contribution. Nice exhibit.

Alan Ferguson
-- <xenoworks@eyerush.com>
overall, the images produced are very obvious and trite. They seem to be overly dependent upon the affects of
what the computer can produce as opposed to how the computer can add and enhance content. Like any "good" art, a solid intent and idea of where one wants to go is necessary.

criticism (if you are open)
Troy Benet's image was
self indulgent, for me.
"Devour" by S.Chard,

The images are compelling and this forum you present certainly has a lot of merit. Thousands at a time can view and/or comment on the work. However, I do find the images displayed annoyingly small. Aside from losing much texture and feel because of rez limitation these pics are too small to see anything clearly. Great idea though.

some better than others, but I would like to see more sights like this, many more. Very well put together and easy to navigate. images load fairly quickly, but if one elects to see the image larger, at least on my 15" monitor, it's too large to fit on the screen, I can only see a 1/4 portion of the image at a time. thank you, some really wonderful images in here. I teach a digital imaging class at Humboldt State University and I will use this sight as an example sight for my students.

Thank you for looking through your gallery. The only suggestion I have to make is the amount of pictures per wall. To my opinion there are to less. For professional people it would be better to have more images per page in a smaller size. The ones we are interessed in could be enlarged afterwards. But still, this is a great medium, with a bright future in the professional circles. Please cotinue your gallery! Jos Tigges. The Netherlands

I find it a little disturbing that little attention to archival quality is being addressed by any of the artist shown here.
As we all know wax transfers, iris inkjets and other inkjets all fade.
Now matter what any publisher claims the life of one of these prints may be,
those of us who have been working with inkjet tech. know that to date,
there is really know archival digital reproductions other than photographic processes.
I have tested many different dyes, pigments, waxes, and uv coatings along with
uv glass and acid free substrates.
To date, the longest anyone has gotten a dye sub, or inkjet to last without a noticable fade is 2 years.
Anyone who says diffent has either not done their tests correctly,
or is trying to sell you an expensive white
lye. The art is super, if we could only make it last....

Dear Sirs,
I find digital photo expo a step in the future. It makes me amazed how electronic can
support photography and communicate with so distant people.
In September this year I will have a photo expo in Dom omladine Belgrade
and hope to promote a bit of digital photography
because I believe it is something like when sound move came along.
I would like to register for future expositions.

I especially liked S. Chard's work. Devour reminds me ,if not in content , but in form , of a friend's work in painting called "Comerse un Cable" which roughly translated means "Eating a wire". Also "Bartlesville" is great. It gives you the feeling of reading someone's intimacies.

Overall-a very beautiful
and 'fetching' show:
Specific Comments- Wall 9
Diane Fenster-'evidence' is a complex image of lovely layers and hot colors juxtaposed with a startling blue series of lines.... Her work feels familiar to me in the area of memories and how we treat them as physical
organisms and as artists....we recreate the past and chase after it like an entomologist chasing butterflies with a net. And in the artist's case, it all ends up on paper and 'evidence'.
Wall 7
Dena Eber - this diaphanous backdrop for the encased being in a membrane is moving, living and also trapped. Very lovely and thought-provoking.
Ching-Fang Chiang - probably the most impeccably created designs-heartbreakingly balanced, but just enough dissonance. I esp. like the sense of a different world of night disappearing
in the spotlight of day.
Wall 6
Jay Selden -very funny piece, yet strangely beautiful and picking up on something about a Christopher Columbus falling off the edge of the earth....
Petra Karadimas - I really like the figure-ground fun here...I actually did not really see the face until second viewing...the line is dominant and really plays with the senses.
Wall 5
Samantha Chard -Moths - reminds me of several 'plagues' I have experienced in my life-the solitary person and the niggling, usually invisible to others, details----the ones one carries around in the head.
Devour-too powerful for comments
Wall 5
Troy Bennet-Fate
I am reminded of the thousand 'little deaths' of the spirit experienced when 'individual' meets the 'majority'.
Wall 1
Sorry, but I think "Tug" is a gratuitous inclusion. Seems we can never get through a show without at least one pair of tits....and in this case it is the traditional 'disembodied'
decapitated women, boiled down to her essence: sexual signalling.
THANKS FOR THIS SHOW....I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED IT.
One comment about the Web - when I clicked on individual works, I got an image so large that I had to do a lot of scrolling.....
I had a better grasp of the works as small JPEG's; so perhaps in future, a doubling of the original rather than so big.
-- Susan Magnolia Hogue <hoguesm@uwec.edu>
I do very pedestrian applications of digital photography such as automatic measurement.
-- Dr. Alberto Gomez-Rivas <alberto @structures.dt.uh.edu>
I find the idea of combining digitally processed
oictures with "old" photographic processes very
interresting.
But why (as in Dan Burkholder's "PIGEONS WITH CURLING
WINDOW") does people have to use the photoshop
filters so that even a child could recognise them.
This makes the pictures taste "cheap", as if the
maker couldn't use his own imagination to create
anything new, just copy what already exists.

Your exbit was great! I am currently going to be starting school to learn photography. These photos were very intresting. Keep up the good works and I will be checking in often.

There are a cou[ple of problems youve stumbled into with this show. One is that you can't get a sense of an artists wirk by showing a piece or two. That has been a problem for these types of shows ever since they started, group shows are very difficult to mount. Secondly, electronic media maybe shoudn't be on gallery walls, I mean isn't that the place for the traditional static art work? The place for the digital art maybe is in a book publishing domain. Then yoiu've solved the first problem at least. You could have an exhibition hall filled with complete statements of the artists work that way. You could see who was really doing significant work, for yourself and for the collective. I mean seeing a piece or two makes me think I have seen this stuff before, oh yeah, looks like art ought to look like. That doesn't get me anywhere, starts to look like a bunck of hobbyists, like when they get tired of their computer art that they will go onto something else like hang gliding. s!
o you've fallen into some problem areas, don't worry no one has really solved them , and even the "big museums" make the same and even more problematic mistakes. And even so, in the end, raising this set of issues might be a very important thing to do in the context of people's visits to your (problematic) show.ilooktdevolvedfor a t

As a student of digital photography, it pleases me to see
artists' work displayed in such a format. I notice
that many of the physical manifestations
of these digital works are iris or dye sub
prints, pointing to the difficulty and expense
of getting digital stuff printed. ( I just went through it

such a digitally oriented space.

Perhaps if there was a selection of image sizes available, some of the works are worth waiting for.
