This is the second year of the Digital Photography Exhibit. The 1994 exhibit is still "open" on the World Wide Web. This, the current (1995), exhibit opened on the walls of the Peoria Art Guild (and at this WEB site) on April 21, 1995. The images will remain hanging until May 20, 1995 at the Peoria Art Guild; they will remain at this WEB site indefinitely. This juried exhibition sought entrants worldwide from artists working in "digital photography." For the purposes of this show, "digital photography" was defined as two-dimensional work which "originated in a 'lens-imaging' device and was then brought to completion on a computer." This would include images originally captured by conventional (film) cameras, video cameras, still-video cameras, digital cameras, and 3D scanners.

This WEB exhibit includes links intended to extend the connection between the artist and the viewer of the art. The artists each submitted an "artist's statement" in which they were invited to write about their personal artistic goals and philosophies. Most artists also provided a self-portrait, either a conventional photograph or a computerized exploration of their visual self-image. More than half of the artists have included linked sound files in which they speak about their work; some sent non-verbal sound files they feel provide an additional dimension to their photographs in the exhibition. There were 153 images entered in the competition. Entries came from 53 different artists from 24 states and from Australia. The jurors selected 30 images for the exhibition, from 26 different artists. The jurors were Howard Goldbaum (the exhibit curator), Associate Professor of Communication at Bradley University; and Mark Siprut, who teaches art at San Diego State University and is the author of The Photoshop Handbook, to be published by Random House. After the opening, the jurors select the recipients of the First, Second, and Third prize awards, totaling $500.

This exhibit will be an annual event. For information about next year's juried competition, please see the 1996 exhibit prospectus. Since this exhibition occupies both "gallery-space" in Peoria (the city) and "virtual-space" on the Internet, entrants are required to submit 35mm slides for jurying. The jurying is conducted from slides to ensure that images are judged as the artists intend, rather than from compressed or lower-resolution transmitted files. Entrants may, however, use a print-out of the prospectus application form in lieu of the hard-copy version.
