Troy Bennett
The things that motivated me as an artist were my desires for things beautiful
and tranquil. I had become consumed by the work of the "f/64 Group" of photographers and chose to see the world as they did, with formal structure and purity of medium. That all changed.
I became frustrated by the lack of a personal statement in my work.
This created a long battle that eventually led to my inability to paint,
shoot, or even draw. For me to continue as a visual artist I had to turn
to writing. Through writing, I was able to examine who I was and discover
what it was that I wanted from my artwork. My writing was only for myself.
It was a way of organizing my thoughts so that I could eventually comment
upon them visually.
I am now asking questions of the world through my artwork. The things that
interest me currently are aspects of the human psyche. Why do we do the
things that we do? My work has evolved from being closed ended statements.
It now asks all of the questions that I've always wanted to ask but was too
insecure or confused. By asking questions of the world and ourselves, we
grow as individuals and as a culture. With every question asked, another
path opens up.
My choice for using digital imaging stems mostly from the overwhelming
number of opportunities that it offers. It is a medium that is young
and begging to be defined.
