Bradley University and The Peoria Art Guild present

"Re-Visioning the Human Form"

Digital Photography '97

a juried exhibition to be held April 25 - May 23, 1997.

The entry deadline is February 1, 1997. Total prize awards: $2,000.

Entrants may print out and use the form at the end of this file as their official entry.

This is the fourth year that Bradley University and the Peoria Art Guild have sponsored this juried competition to explore current work being created in this new medium. Adobe Systems Inc. is the corporate sponsor of the Exhibit. Whereas the first three yearly exhibits were open to submissions of any work created in digital photography, the 1997 Exhibit will focus upon a particular genre of new work.

"Re-Visioning the Human Form" - Digital Photography '97

Artists working in portraiture or figurative work in digital photography are invited to enter. Any image which concerns itself with the human face and/or body, AND which was created by using both a camera and a computer is eligible.

The images selected for the exhibition will be shown in both the "physical space" of the galleries, and in the "virtual space" of the World Wide Web. As of April, 1996, the Digital Photography Exhibits have had a total of more than 380,000 visits.

Within the theme of "Re-Visioning the Human Form," any two-dimensional image that had its origin in a lens- imaging camera device and was brought to completion within a computer is eligible. This would include images originally captured by conventional (film) cameras, video cameras, still-video cameras, digital cameras, and 3D scanners.

The juror is Olivia Parker, an artist now working in digital media, who achieved international recognition for her multi-layered imagery long before the introduction of computers to fine art photography. In a 1995 interview in CAMERA AND DARKROOM magazine , she said, "I regard all processes as a means of expression...I am more interested in ideas and content than technique or formal concerns for their own sake. Whether I'm working with black-and-white, color or digital imaging, the technical aspect of what I am doing becomes interesting only as an expressive means."

Image Submission

Artists may submit a maximum of three entries for the non- refundable fee of $20. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Bradley University. You may instead elect to charge your credit card (see entry form). Entries must be postmarked by February 1, 1997. Mail to: Digital Photography '97, Heuser Art Center, Bradley University, Peoria, IL 61625, U.S.A. Images submitted for jurying must be re-sized to an approximate 2MB file size, then compressed using the JPEG format ("maximum quality"). The resulting file will likely be less than 300K in size, usually allowing three images and the digital entry form to fit onto one high-density disk. Label the disk(s) with your name, and the title(s) of the work. Be sure that you have used an appropriate computer diskette mailer, or have otherwise protected your disk for mailing. A print-out of the entry form (availabl e here) must be filled-out and included with your entry.

If you would prefer to enter using the printed version of the prospectus, these will be available in August. Send a SASE to Digital Photography '97, Heuser Art Center, Bradley University, Peoria, IL 61625, U.S.A.

Can I FTP My Entry?

It is possible to do an entirely paperless entry to this year's competition. First, select "The Entry Form" at the end of this page. Use your browser to create a text file of the Entry Form. (On Netscape 2.0, select "Document Source" from the "View" menu.) Type in all information called for in the Entry Form.

You must name your files using the following convention:

The "entry form" text file should be named "lastname.firstname"
Your first image file should be named "lastname.firstname.A"
Your second image file should be named "lastname.firstname.B"
Your third image file should be named "lastname.firstname.C"

Thus an artist named Jane Doe would name her files as follows:
Her "entry form" text file would be named "doe.jane"
Her first image file would be named "doe.jane.A"
And so on.

For payment of the $20 entry fee, those choosing the internet-based entry method may provide Visa or MasterCard information in the place provided in the "entry form." If you are uncomfortable sending a non-secured text file containing your credit card inf ormation, you may mail the credit card information (or send a check) with a printed-out entry form. Bradley University and the Peoria Art Guild will not be responsible for any losses incurred due to transmission of your credit card information.

FTP (log on as "anonymous") the "entry form" and up to three images files to: bradley.bradley.edu/digphoto97

An acknowledgment will be sent to your e-mail address, which must be provided on the entry form. After the jurying, notification will be sent by e-mail. If your image(s) is selected for the exhibit, you must provide a matted print for exhibition in the gallery. Exhibition prints may be in any conventional or digital photographic medium: silver print, C-print, Ilfochrome, Iris Ink Jet, dye-sublimation, etc .

Entry Rules

The Peoria Art Guild is a nonprofit, member-supported organization dedicated to the advancement of Fine Arts and Fine Crafts in the community. A 40% commission, subtracted from the sales price which you indicate for your artwork, will be retained by the Peoria Art Guild from all sales transacted from this exhibit.

Jurying

Jurying will be by digital image files. The juror will review all images submitted and determine which entries will be included in the exhibition. Artists whose works are accepted from the jurying process will be notified by mail with further shipping information and labeling material.

An "artist's statement," a technical explanation, a self-portrait, and a sound file of you speaking will be required of accepted entrants. These additional submissions will create the multimedia artist/viewer interactions of the Digital Photography Exhibit web site. These can be interpreted within a wide-range of creative possibilities, as evidenced by the statement, portraits, and voice files in the current exhibition. Information regarding format and delivery of these files will be sent with the acceptance letter.

The gallery reserves the right to withhold from the exhibition works which do not fulfill the expectations as indicated by the digital file. Prize awards will be determined by the juror and announced after the gallery opening. All accepted work must remain for the duration of the exhibition.
