Moods by Sandra Givan

"All the knowledge I possess everyone else can acquire, but my heart is all my own" -- GOETHE The Sorrows of Young Werner (1774)

I have always been interested in texture and design. I worked with India Ink years ago as it gave my drawings the contrast and detail that I was looking for. I then began working with fiber, weaving intricate patterns on my loom. I became interested in nature's patterns and began using photography as a means to capture them. It was interesting to stretch the limits on what the photograph could become by using various techniques. Then along came modern technology that allowed me to scan my photographs into a computer enabling me to enhance them to a greater degree. From that standpoint the ideas are endless and have enabled me to take the world as normally seen and embellish it with contrast, detail, texture, color and emotion.

By changing algorithms the image takes on an entirely different look. I tend to save some of the original elements of the image so there is a distinction of what it represents, but place it in a new environment to be viewed from a different, more emotional perspective. This allows expression of what is within me and evokes feelings that I hope others will share when they view my work. Both curiosity and empathy cause me to see things in a different manner and then try to place it in a media form where it may be passed along. "Moods" stirred an emotion in me that I hope will be experienced by others, a feeling of melancholy, which is a very real emotion for all of us at one time or another in our lives. I had an interest in hand coloring black and white photographs to show emphasis. With the computer I was able to add a bit of color to this image with much the same result.
