"Blue"
"Untitled"
Technical Explanation

In my traditional photography I work in black and white, but with my computer work I use color extensively. Photographer Ted Orland once said "I like color but I want it to be my own color not someone else's..." In both images ("Untitled" and "Blue") I started with black and white prints, scanned on a flatbed scanner and brought into Photoshop. I do my cropping and level adjustments before converting the file to RGB. By using a combination of hand selection, layers and quickmasks I selectively colorize the image with the colorize feature in the Hue and Saturation palette. Combining images was primarily accomplished by using the calculate function. I work as simply as possible to avoid the "computer" look but also try to build on the inherent uniqueness of the medium.

Conventional black and white photographs shot with a Hasselblad 503cx on Kodak TMax 100, 120 film and printed on Ilford Multigrade IV RC paper. Prints were scanned on a LaCie SilverScan in grayscale mode at 300 ppi, 1:1. Images were processed on a Macintosh IIci 32/1gig equipped with a Daystar 040/40 accelerator, Daystar ChargerPlus DPS board, Radius Precision Color 24Xpro color board pushing a Radius 19" color monitor and an Apple display card 8/24 GC pushing an Apple HiRes 13" monitor.

Software: Mac OS 7.5.1, Adobe Photoshop 3.0.5, Aldus Gallery Effects 1.5.1, Kai's Power Tools 3.0. QuarkXpress 3.32r2.

Images were output as CMYK files to a 3M Rainbow dye sublimation color proofer.
