My work has a centrally figurative basis which is used as a tool to reflect my emotional, physical, and social path through life. For a couple of years I attempted to distance myself from figurative work by substituting figures with landscapes and still life. I found most of this work to be lifeless and non-compelling and quickly returned to my passion, the figure. The figure is a challenging subject. The use of the figure can place the viewer into a personal and deeply emotional environment. My family and acquaintances, when featured in my work, often become victims to my personal experiences and emotional battles. The content of my artwork is generally based on an intuitive level. While my subject matter and compositions are selected on a conscious level, the meaning of the piece, more often than not, is a product of neurotic forces in my unconscious mind.

In 1992 I began exploring the world of computer art. My background in photography and printmaking made for an easy transition to the computer. I enjoy working through processes to create my artwork. It fascinates me that by the assistance of the computer, I am able to create hundreds of variations of a single photograph. From the use of one photograph, I am able to create such diverse variations in content and composition from the original piece that it often becomes difficult to stop altering it. The process is reminiscent of a painting by Matisse called Pink Nude. My fascination with this painting is not so much in the painting itself, as it is in the fact that Matisse took a photograph at twenty-two different stages while painting it. The process of the painting evolving is as intriguing as the end result.
