In my recent computer work, I strive to emulate a traditional art feel with a computer art flair. My scanner allows me to bring my photographs to a working environment where they can be manipulated endlessly. I also use my scanner as a camera by placing objects directly on the scanner, often moving them and replacing them while the scanner is in motion. With the use of my pressure-sensitive pen, I am able to manipulate scanned images with precise, yet painterly results.
The Homeplace was created from a single photograph which was scanned into my computer system. The photograph was manipulated in both Photoshop and Painter. With my love for woodcuts in mind, I created this piece as one would carve a woodcut. While the process of carving is methodical, the results of reduction leave a striking emotional impression. Prior to reduction, the faces were cropped, blown up to the size of the background picture and further manipulated to create a warped and water-soaked effect. The faces were placed over the background photo creating a surrealist effect with the piece appearing to be clear and apparent from a distance which seems to become an entirely different scene when viewed close up.
