Past, Present, Future: Indifferent Structures by Richard Van Hoesel

"Past, Present, Future: Indifferent Structures"
Technical Explanation

This image originated from a photo taken in Burma in 1995, of a dilapidated wall. Most of the structures in the image (past and present structures) are the result of an experiment in folding the wall to develop a three dimensional-like construct from a single two dimensional 'facade.' To enhance the depth effect (and for contextual reasons), an additional photo taken inside an old convent in Peru (in Arequipa, 1992) was added on the right (symbolizing the future direction). Colour layers were added from an unrelated image to obtain the blue contrast to the gold wall. Synthetic coloration added to separate differently angles and reliefs on walls.

The 'blood-like' patterns on the ground in the front were scanned from a can of sardines in tomato sauce (yum!). To enhance directions of past, present and future, the face (self portrait) was placed strategically at numerous places on the walls (none in the 'future' of course...), and occasional repetitions of wall segments were cloned into different spaces. Further deviations such as piping etc. on the left were added synthetically. Lighting and shadows were adjusted throughout to blend the whole.
