This image started out as two black-and-white pictures, taken with a 45mm lens on a Contax 35mm camera. I placed the mannequin legs in different locations and positions around my house and shot a roll of film. I was fascinated by the clear lines of the legs and at the same time amused by the physical presence of those dirty, old legs in dear spaces of my home. At another occasion I had taken the picture of the lace to be used as texture in a different image. After scanning both negatives into the computer, all the manipulations were undertaken in Photoshop. First I made a selection around the legs and pasted the lacy pattern in to emphasize the femininity of the legs, which was so very much in contrast to the old legs that had been detached from the mannequin and which I had found in the garbage. Then I colorized the image. Since a fill of one color to large areas (i.e., the chair, the floor, the legs) resulted in a rather dull picture, I started manipulating the curves until I achieved more variation in the colors. Finished! The whole creation of this image was a playful, photographic exploration.
