I have always enjoyed making pictures. My formal education took place at the Yale University School of Art where I received an MFA in Graphic Design. Having worked since graduate school in the traditions of black and white photography, there came a point about ten years ago when I began to feel the need to find expression in a new vocabulary, something not possessed by color or hand-tinted photographs. Using a computer to digitize and alter photographs I have found such a vocabulary. While the creation of most of my images would not have been possible without the use of a computer, I hope that its presence is more transparent than obtrusive. There is a particular balance or blend between photography, painting and collage made possible by the computer which gives these images a unique quality. They donŐt emphasize or disguise the fact that a computer was used to make them. The computer is just another tool. It puts great power of expression in the hands of the artist and allows for exquisite precision. As with any powerful tool, however, there are many hazards, foremost of which is a tendency to overwork the image. Knowing when you have found what you are looking for and when to stop is key. As with any medium the images must speak for themselves.
