When one is submerged in the underwater world, it is easy to understand why such terms as fairyland, underwater garden, fantasy and ethereal are used to describe the seascapes and creatures that dwell there. It is imposible to be in the sea and not to imagine a fanciful existence, complete with brave heroes, sea-monsters, and lovely mermaids. It is no wonder there is bounteous imagery in the old sea-lore! It is easy to conjure up mermaids basking on the beds of giant clamshells, combing their long wavy hair and performing other daily rituals. How natural the impulse to reach back into the cultural collective imagery of the West and to people the reef-scenes with the characters from sea-stories.This picture of PelŽ is a narrative of one of her stories. I call it PelŽ's Journey. This is the story, briefly:

The Polynesian goddess, PelŽ, is best known for her fiery temper and her association with volcanoes. Fire is not only the symbol of anger, it is revered for its regenerative powers. So, PelŽ is also honored as the goddess of rebirth. In this illustration, PelŽ is preparing to travel to Hawaii from Tahiti with her little sister Ha'iaka, who was carried across the waves securely bundled in an egg.
