Graduate Certificate in Management
Program Overview
Moving into a general management role from technical expert in a functional management role requires advanced management coursework at the Graduate level. The Graduate Certificate in Management gives students exposure to the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to succeed in the general managerial role.
Gaining the leadership skills for management is the focus of the Graduate Certificate in Management, a four course, 12 credit hour sequence of courses in business management that provides graduates with hands-on skills in the management, supervision, and leadership of organizations.
This sequence requires that the student choose at least one course in “Management Theory,” “Interpersonal Relations,” and “Organizational Behavior,” with five additional electives available in diverse areas, such as “Executive Development,” and “Obtaining, Analyzing, and Applying Market Information.”
Flexibility in scheduling is maximized, with all classes available during the evenings, weekends or over the internet, in an accelerated semester format of 7 weeks or fewer. Both Fall and Spring semester start dates are available for the Graduate Certificate in Management.
Students who subsequently enroll in the MBA at the Foster College of Business Administration may apply credits from Graduate Certificate in Management towards their MBA degree subject to Graduate School policies.
Students with an MBA who wish to keep up with innovations in management may also enroll in the Graduate Certificate in Management.
Why Earn a Certificate?
As a graduate of a technical program, it is natural that you will progress in your career to becoming a supervisor or manager, responsible for overseeing the work of others and producing organizational outcomes through the management of resources. Your education in a technical discipline provides you with the skills to succeed in that discipline, but the skills you need in order to lead and manage others while producing valuable organizational results is a separate area of education.
The Graduate Certificate in Management will give you exposure to the knowledge, understanding, and skills needed to succeed in the managerial role. Core courses in interpersonal relations skills, managerial theory, and/or organization behavior will give you a background in management practice and theory. Additional elective courses will enable you to tailor a program of study appropriate to your organization that will prepare you for advancement to particular organizational roles.
