Accounting
Accounting is often called the "language of business" because it deals with interpreting and communicating information about a company's past activities and forecasting future operations. Every decision maker, from the owner of a small start-up to the CEO of a global conglomerate, works with accounting information. This is a far stretch from the stereotype of back-room number crunching.
The Mission of the Department of Accounting is to prepare students for productive and satisfying careers. The highest priority of the Department is to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to commence and continue their careers. Our undergraduate program meets the needs of students seeking accounting careers in private industry and the public sector and lays the foundation for those seeking careers in public practice. Our Master of Science in Accounting program is designed both for individuals entering public practice and for students and experienced accountants desiring to further their accounting education.
The Department of Accounting faculty are experienced, dedicated teachers and scholars who maintain relationships with the professional community. The faculty actively engage in research and other professional activities that complement and enhance their teaching and contribute to the accounting profession. Service activities are valued for their contributions to the Department by promoting the well being of the Department, College, and University and strengthening relationships with the business community.

The HealthSouth Story: A Wagon to Disaster Aaron Beam, co-founder and first CFO of HealthSouth, meet with students from across campus to discuss how he founded a major company, became a key player in a $2.7 billion fraud, and went to prison for his crimes. With the HealthSouth turmoil behind him, Beam is focusing on the future. He believes it's his obligation to share his story so that others won't be led astray. He understands the pressures that abound in the boardroom. He wants to educate today's business leaders - and the leaders of tomorrow - to the pitfalls to watch for along the road to success. His message to students was: "Realize that one day, you could be asked to do something you shouldn't do. Don't be overly influenced by others to the point that you do wrong. You have to have some moral character about how you conduct yourself in the business world. The pressure to make earnings, to make money, can lead you down a path that you shouldn't go." |
Worldcom Internal Auditor Visits Bradley Cynthia Cooper, Time Magazine's Person of the Year and former internal auditor at Worldcom, addressed Bradley students and the business community about the development of Worldcom's $11 billion fraud and her role in uncovering the scandal. She discussed how management "cooked the books" to meet earnings expectations and then pressured her to postpone an audit investigating the problems. Ms. Cooper and her team continued to conduct their audit and eventually uncovered entries for billions of dollars of assets that the company did not have. Ms. Cooper insisted that she was not a whistleblower and was only doing her job. She stood by her ethics and told the truth. Everyone present will face tough decisions and her presentation was an inspiration to do what is right. Ms. Cooper's appearance was part of the McCord Lecture Series which brings nationally know speakers to Bradley to speak to students and the business community about current events. |

Beta Alpha Psi has 284 chapters worldwide. About 120 chapters are annually recognized as superior. This past year, the BAP board of directors realized that several chapters were going above and beyond the requirements for a superior chapter. They put forth another challenge – become a Gold Chapter, which is officially known as the KPMG Gold Challenge.
Six accounting majors from BAP and their faculty advisor participated in the 2009 BAP annual conference in Brooklyn. The conference began with 900 students from around the world conducting one of the largest one-day park beautification projects ever held in New York.
