Presentor: Dale Hilton, Associate Director, Education and Public Programs The Cleveland Museum of Art - View Biography
Overview: The mission of the Cleveland Museum of Art is to fulfill its dual roles as one of the world's most distinguished comprehensive art museums and as one of northeastern Ohio's principal civic and cultural institutions. The museum, established in 1913, seeks to bring the pleasure and meaning of
art to the broadest possible audience in accordance with the highest aesthetic, intellectual and professional standards. Toward this end the museum augments, preserves, exhibits and fosters understanding of the outstanding collections of world art it holds in trust for the public and presents complementary exhibitions and programs. The Cleveland Museum of Art embraces its leadership role in collecting, scholarship, education and community service.
The museum’s Interactive Video Distance Learning program features over 40 lesson topics and has reached thousands of students and teachers across the country since its inception in 1999. Lessons are standards-based, feature extensive teacher materials and use art and artifacts to address disciplines such as Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies and Foreign Languages. Working with CILC promotes connections for the museum to a broad national audience. In addition, CILC has increased access and helped professionalize the school IVDL arena with tools such as its teacher-friendly website, Content Provider Directory and the Keystone Conference.
Presentor: Emily Hanson, Distance Learning Coordinator Indianapolis Zoo - View Biography
Overview: Using a mobile unit to broadcast live from within the depths of the Amazon rainforest, tableside during a kangaroo's annual dental exam, and using penguins as co-hosts (the stars of the show, really), we have reached out to hundreds of thousands of students with our programming and brought them one step closer to connecting with wildlife and wild places.
The role of CILC in our success has been invaluable. The marketing tools they have developed over the years have served as highly effective ways of bringing our message to audiences that would be difficult to reach otherwise, and their support -- both of content and technology -- has beenextremely important to the development of our programs.
The staff at CILC has always been a group of highly dedicated and knowledgeable people with roots deep in the education community. As advocates for classroom educators, content providers, and technology specialists, they have bridged these groups together and have played a significant role in promoting interactive videoconferencing across the country. Our own programs at the Zoo have only been made better because of CILC and the resources they provide.
