Brett Harnett joined the faculty at the University of Cincinnati (U.C.) in 2004 as a research assistant professor and serves as the manager of Experimental IT for the Center for Surgical Innovation. Prior to joining U.C., Harnett was the director of Experimental IT for a NASA-sponsored research program at the Virginia Commonwealth University and chief technology officer for OrbitalMed, LLC.

Before moving to Virginia, Harnett was a systems analyst for the Yale University School of Medicine. Harnett's primary responsibilities include overseeing technology development for application, network, and core services for the department of surgery and the Center for Surgical Innovation. This included needs analysis, system design, integration, implementation and as a technical liaison for the Health Alliance.

Harnett is a member of the American Telemedicine Association, the IEEE, the AMIA and the National Institutes of Health - Center for Scientific Review.

Harnett has directed the technology for numerous high-profile projects including the monitoring of vital signs of climbers on Mt. Everest, crew health assessment during the MARS project at the Arctic Circle, the Collaborative Ukrainian Experiment for NASA shuttle flight STS-87, a participant of Shadow Bowl – an experimental anti-terrorism exercise during Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego and zero gravity experiments for surgical simulation on the NASA KC-135 microgravity aircraft.

A graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1984.

Over the past six years Harnett has published over a dozen peer-reviewed manuscripts, two book chapters and has been an invited speaker at various conferences and international meetings.
