About Internet2®

The Internet2 is being led by over 200 universities working in partnership with industry and government to expand advanced network applications and technologies, to create the future's Internet. Internet2 is recreating the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered the current Internet in its infancy. Bradley is taking a lead role in the integration of curriculum and high speed networking in collaboration with other institutions.

The goals of Internet2 are to produce a leading edge network capability for the national research community; to enable revolutionary Internet applications; and to ensure the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broader Internet community.

Collaboration from Internet2 members takes place in applications, engineering, and middleware, through Internet2 Working Groups.

What does Internet2 mean for Bradley

In September of 2001, Bradley University received from the National Science Foundation a grant to establish a high performance connection to Internet2. Internet2 provides a high performance network for communication between all students, faculty, and staff and their colleagues at other Internet2 member institutions for access to research and educational resources. With a connection to the national high-speed backbone, known as Abilene, digital information passes over Internet2 now much faster than the first Internet.

The first Internet2 course offered at Bradley was a screen writing course. The technology allowed Bradley to expand its curriculum by drawing on the expertise of professionals nationwide who can go to an Internet2 university near them and lead a class much as they would if they were on campus in Peoria.

With the high-speed connection and membership in the Internet2 organization, Bradley has a unique opportunity to collaborate in developing new applications and methods that will have a direct impact on our own research and education programs.
