Basketball Rules
General Rules adapted for intramural play. In all other cases not covered here, rules of the National Federation State High School Athletic Association will be in effect.
- GAME TIME AND FORFEIT TIME: Game time is forfeit time. Each team should do their part to make sure games are started on time. Four players must be present to start a game. A team may play with less than four if they foul out, or have to leave the game due to an injury.
- LENGTH OF GAME: A game will consist of two 20 minute halves. The first 18 minutes of each half will be a running clock, only stopping for time-outs, official’s request, and injuries. The clock will stop during the last two minutes of each half and overtime in accordance to all timing regulations. Half-time will be three minutes long.
- OVERTIME PERIODS: If the score is tied at the end of regulation play, the ball will be put into play with a jump ball. The first overtime will be two minutes in length, and all others thereafter will be one minute in length.
- TIME-OUTS: Each team will be allowed two 30 second time-outs per half. Teams will also be allowed one 30 second time-out for any overtime period. Time-outs will not carry over into the next half or overtime periods.
- JUMP BALLS: Each game and overtime period will start with a center jump. After the first jump ball, all other jump ball situations will follow the alternating possession rule.
- FREE THROWS AND FOULS:
- Personal Fouls In the Act of Shooting – two free throws if the player’s try was not successful, one if the shot was made. This is in effect in the last two minutes of the game also.
- Common Fouls – ball awarded out-of-bounds always until the last two minutes of the game when all common fouls are two shots.
- Player Control Fouls – on any player control foul, the basket will not count and there are no free throws awarded. This also includes the last two minutes of the game.
- Technical Fouls – any unsportsmanlike technical will result in two free throws by the opposing team and the ball at the division line.
Faking a charge, slapping the backboard, failure to hand the ball to an official, hanging on the rim unless to avoid an injury, dunking at any time before, during half-time, or after a game, any profane language, and unsportsmanlike conduct may be considered a technical foul.
- Flagrant Fouls – Flagrant fouls may or may not be intentional. Any flagrant fouls will result in automatic disqualification, two free throws, and ball out of bounds at half court.
- Intentional Fouls – Intentional Fouls are fouls designed to stop or keep the clock from starting, to neutralize an opponent’s obvious advantageous position, or contact away from the ball or when not playing the ball. Any intentional foul will result in two free throws and the ball out-of-bounds at the spot nearest the foul.
- A player must leave the game after receiving five fouls (personal or technical).
- A player must leave the game after receiving two unsportsmanlike technical fouls. In addition, that player will be disqualified for his/her next scheduled contest.
- Captains from each team are responsible for their players and fans. If fans get out of hand, the captain, is responsible for getting them under control, otherwise a technical foul will be assessed to the captain.
- SUBSTITUTIONS – Teams may substitute eligible players whenever
there is a dead ball situation. Players must report to the scorekeeper
and the official will beckon the player onto the court. Only players
and officials will be allowed on the court during the game and at
half-time.
- ELIGIBILITY – Players must be currently registered Bradley
students, faculty, or staff. All players must have a valid ID to play.
No alumni or family members are allowed to play. A player must put
their name and ID number on the scorecard every game they play in.
Each team is allowed a maximum of one (1) ex-collegiate player, either
junior college or four year colleges. Ex-collegiate players must play
in the "A" league. No collegiate player from the current school year
is allowed to play. No student may play on more than one Men's
or Women's team. No student may play up or down once they have
played on one team. A student may play on a Corec team in addition
to playing on one Men's or Women's team.
- EQUIPMENT – All players must wear a jersey/shirt with numbers
on front and back. Jerseys and balls can be checked out from the department
with a valid Bradley ID Card. Players must wear t-shirts under department
jerseys. All players must wear court shoes at all times.
- MERCY RULE – If a team is 20 points ahead when the official
announces the two minute warning in the second half, or any time inside
two minutes a team gains a lead of 20 points, the game shall be over.
- PROTESTS – Judgment calls cannot be protested. If a team captain
wishes to protest an official’s rule application or interpretation,
he/she must do so before the 2nd live ball. The protesting
team captain shall notify the officials to suspend play and request
that the Supervisor be brought to the court to make a ruling prior
to continuation of play.
If the team captain disagrees with the Supervisor’s protest
ruling, then the team captain shall immediately inform the Supervisor
the contest is being played under protest. The Supervisor must then
document the contest facts (player name, team played for, score, ruling,
date, time, site number, time remaining in contest, etc.) and file
a report with the Director or Program Assistants. It is the team captain’s
responsibility to file a written formal protest for rule application
or interpretation or eligibility by 4:30 pm the next business day
along with a $10.00 protest fee. If the protest is overturned, then
the $10.00 fee will be returned.
- Schedules – Team schedules will be available for pick up in
the IM Office. A copy of each league and league standings will be
posted on the IM Bulletin Board. This board should be checked thoughout
the season to assure accuracy in our records.
If a team cannot play at their scheduled time, the captain should
notify the IM Offfice for open game times. It is then the responsibility
of the captain to arrange the make up game. If this cannot be achieved,
the team captain must notify the IM Office of a default before 4:00pm
of game day for games played on the weekdays, and before 4:00pm on
Friday for games played on the weekend. If the IM Office is not notified
accordingly, the missed game will be considered a forfeit.
- Playoffs – Every team that does not forfeit a game during
the regular season and has a 2.5 sportsmanship rating will make the
playoffs. If a team forfeits, they will be required to pay a $10.00
fee to be eligible for the playoffs. If a team forfeits twice during
the season, they will be dropped from the season schedule.
- No player may play on more than 1 men's team or 1 women's team.
A player may not be on a team in multiple divisions. Example: A player
may not be on an A league team and a B league team. The exception
to this rule is the corec league. A player may be on 1 men's or women's
team and one corec team.
- COREC MODIFICATIONS
- Players – Each team will consist of five players, two males and three females or three males and two females. A team can never play with more than three players of one sex.
- Scoring – Females’ points will count as one more than the males’ points. Example: regular 2 point field goals for men, will be scored three points when made by a female.
- Males may Never enter the Lane Area – Offense: If a male enters the lane while on offense this will be a violation and the other team will receive the ball out of bounds. Defense: If a male enters the lane while he is on defense, the offensive team is awarded two points and possession of the ball. The lane area extends out of bounds under the basket beyond the end line with the exception for the male who is out of bounds making a throw in. Female players have no court restrictions.
- Game Ball – The women’s size basketball will be the official game ball for Corec games.
