Secure Wireless Networking
(802.1x)
Effective Monday June 27, 2005

IRT will be implementing the Secure Wireless Networking Initiative starting at 8:00 am Monday, June 27, 2005, across the campus wireless network. The new secure wireless network is named "Aeris."

Anticipate intermittant wireless network outages during the morning hours as we convert existing network access points to the new system. Please minimize your usage during this time.

Important Note!

Please do not make the recommended changes  to your network settings (instructions located on menu bar at left) until there is a notice on the "Outages and Upgrades" area of the IRT Web site, located at:(http://www.bradley.edu/irt/) The notice will indicate that the transition to secure wireless is complete.

WHAT'S NEW:

Users of OLIAIR, MORAIR, CONAIR. GCCAIR, LIBRARY, AIRG and STCAIR will no longer see these network names (SSIDs) listed automatically as available networks.

Aeris will be the only broadcast SSID (like building SSIDs are now) after Monday. It will only work if wireless security (802.1x) is set up on your laptop.

Secure wireless is designed for current computer operating systems and takes just a few minutes to configure for Windows XP and Mac OS X 10.3/10.4 systems.

Older systems will use the new "Unsecure" wireless SSID (network name) for accessing the wireless network. This SSID is not broadcast and will need to be set up manually.

Visitors to campus have wireless access by using the "Guest" network. This SSID is not broadcast and will need to be set up manually. The Guest SSID allows Web network traffic only.

                                   Bradley Wireless Options

Aeris provides a more secure medium in a wireless computing environment. By connecting to Aeris, you'll know that your information is encrypted. With this change, you will be logging on to the wireless network, just like you do currently with an Ethernet connection.

Aeris supports these operating systems:

  • Windows XP SP2
  • Windows 2000 SP4
  • Mac OS X 10.3 and 10.4

It is necessary to configure your laptop for access to Aeris. You will need an A, B, G. or A/B/G wireless card.

See 802.1x Setup Links on the left for instructions on preparing your laptop to use secure wireless.

No network security option is failsafe. Be sure to continue to follow basic precautions when using the secure wireless network.

Unsecure Wireless Access

As the name implies, connecting to Unsecure does not offerprotection against hackers or intruders looking for data and information.

The Unsecure zone is made available to users who have laptops running the following operating systems and a wireless network card:

  • Windows 95/98
  • Windows ME
  • Mac OS 9

To set up the Unsecure SSID, refer to your wireless card user's guide. Instructions vary by card and manufacturer.

After setting up the Unsecure SSID, network registration is required before gaining access to the unsecure area of the wireless network. Registration begins when you first open Internet Explorer or other web browser. Follow the instructions to register your computer.

After your system is registered on the network, you may use the Unsecure SSID for access to the wireless network.

Instructions are provided on the left for setting up the Unsecure SSID on newer systems. However, we recommend exclusive use of the secure network for those systems.

Available for campus visitors. When connected to Guest, users have access to basic Web browsing only.

Instructions for setting up the Guest SSID on newer systems are provided on the left. Visitors with older laptops will need to refer to the user's guide for their wireless card or computer for instructions.
