Proper Handling of Chemicals
Using Fume Hoods
Before working with any chemical, be sure
to be aware of any hazards involved. Chemicals which produce toxic or
irritating fumes MUST be used in a working fume hood.
Organic and research hoods are always left
on. Freshman hoods on the other hand must be turned on.
The laboratory chemical hood is a ventilated enclosure that protects you
from being exposed to chemical fumes, gases, and aerosols that are generated within the enclosure. Protection is
provided by room air that is drawn into
the hood and vented to the atmosphere. The hood ventilation provides further protection by diluting the concentration
of flammable gases below explosion limits.
