Laboratory/Research Assistant Training

Accidents
Glassware and Thermometers
Broken glass should be disposed of in a
special container provided in each laboratory and not simply thrown in the
garbage. When placed with the regular trash, it can pose a hazard for the
janitorial staff. Assistants should keep an eye out for chipped or cracked
glass and other damaged equipment. Star cracks are often not obvious.
Remind student to carefully check over glassware before use. Prevent an accident
before it occurs!
If a mercury thermometers gets broken,
notify the instructor. Spilled mercury should be immediately and thoroughly
cleaned up. Various Mercury Spill Kits, including sprays and wipes
are available in room #238 for decontamination of surfaces. Mercury vapors
are poisonous so care should be used to clean up all mercury, especially any
near a source of heat.
