Employment Messages

Employment messages are an important component of written business communication.  The job search process may be the first time for some to produce professional correspondence. There are challenges that materialize in both what to say and how to say it.

The purpose of employment messages is to enhance the writer as a employable individual.

It is important to know the objectives of the letter you are writing and what you would like to happen as a result of sending it.  There are many types of employment messages including resumes and the various types of letters: application, prospecting, networking, thank-you, acceptance, withdrawal, and rejection.  Three types of employment messages are elaborated in this site.

Application letters are used to respond to job advertisements and postings.  The purpose of an application letter is to get your enclosed resume read so that a request for an interview will be granted.  Click to learn more about application letters and to see an example.

Resumes are designed to grab the employer's attention and compete with other qualified applicants for an interview.  Click to learn more about resumes and see an example.

Thank you letters are sent after each interview to thank the potential employer for his or her time.  They can also reaffirm interest in the position interviewed for and can clarify any negative information.  Click to learn more about thank you letters and to see an example.
