Seth Katz was appointed to Bradley as an Assistant Professor in 1992, after completing his Ph.D. at the University of Chicago in 1991, where he also received an A.M. in 1985. His educational background prior to the University of Chicago includes a B.A. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (1984). He also received the Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities from the University of Chicago in 1984, which continued until 1989. His special fields include grammar, language theory, and critical discourse analysis. He teaches courses in linguistics, ENG 311: Introduction to Language; ENG 312: English Grammar; and ENG 550: Language Theory; composition, ENG 301: Argumentative Writing; ENG 508: Composing Hypertext; literature, ENG 368: Science Fiction and Fantasy; and Western Civilization.

Professor Katz's recent research has focused on critical discourse analysis, linguistic politeness, and conceptual blending theory. He is also the author of an as-yet published English grammar text. Professor Katz has also supervised a number of graduate and undergraduate independent study courses on various topics in linguistics and computer applications in the study of literature and language.

Professor Katz is the faculty advisor to Bradley University Hillel, BU's center for Jewish life on campus; and the Bradley Fencing Club.
