About The Department of Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics consists of 15 full-time faculty members supplemented by additional part-time faculty and staff.  All of our faculty teach courses within the major.  Our faculty are active in scholarly research and engage in service to the university.

The department offers three programs for students interested in mathematics: actuarial science, mathematics for secondary school teaching, and the traditional mathematics major.  In addition, we have a minor in mathematics.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics

The Department of Mathematics offers a Bachelor of Science degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.  Students earning a degree in mathematics go on to

    • Graduate School in Mathematics: these students intend to pursue a career as a working mathematician;
    • Various graduate programs: these students use the mathematics major as preparation for programs in economics, computer science, philosophy, linguistics, theology, engineering, and physics, to name a few.
    • Careers in the real world: these students use their problem-solving skills to work as consultants, researchers, and managers in a variety of commercial areas.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics -- Actuarial Sciences

A degree in actuarial sciences in mathematics prepares students to apply mathematics to risk as it is related to insurance, annuities and pension plans.  Students typically have passed at least one of the professional exams before graduation.

Bachelor of Science in Mathematics -- Secondary Education

Students wishing to be certified to teach mathematics at the secondary level in Illinois enroll in this program.  The requirements for this degree include a core of mathematics courses with additional courses to complete the requirements for a secondary teaching certificate.

Mathematics Minor

The department also offers a minor in mathematics.  Students who wish to minor in mathematics must take three introductory mathematics courses and four upper-level courses.

Classes

Classes are small; introductory class enrollment is about 35 students per section, and upper-level enrollments are typically under 20. We are a student-friendly department.  Our students receive individual attention from both faculty and staff.
