TEXT: Foundations of Astronomy 7th Edition, Michael A. Seeds, Thomson 2003.

MATERIALS:
• Supplementary Course Materials - distributed at first meeting.
• Starlite: Each student must have a light for map reading and note taking in the dark. "Starlites" are available in the Museum Store @ $24.95 (checks and credit cards accepted), or student may prepare a special flashlight, dimmed so that no direct light escapes. Required
• Heifetz Planisphere (yearly star map), available at the Lakeview Museum Store ~$ 14 Required.
• Booklet "Cycles, An Introduction to Astronomy & Time" available at the Museum Store ~$ 4 Required.
• "Skylights" on the Web at http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/~kaler/skylights.html, and Stars of the Week with constellation photographs at http://www.astro.uiuc.edu/~kaler/sow/sow.html.
• Blackboard.bradley.edu - Announcements, links and grades will be posted here
• Current NASA Press Releases pertaining to astronomical discoveries. The content of these will be included on the tests. These may be found at www.nasa.gov in the "NASA Today" page, (link on Blackborad) or you may subscribe via your Bradley E-Mail account to NASA's Press Release List. Send an Internet E- mail message to domo@hq.nasa.gov. In the body of the message (not the subject line) users should type the words "subscribe press-release" (no quotes). The system will reply with a confirmation.

GRADING: Reports - 300 points total
                            Fully Graded Reports 50 points each, 250 points maximum
                                    You may not do a planetarium report unless you attend that session
                            Pass/No Pass reports - 25 points each
                            See "Summary of Assignments" for Due Dates
                            Reports are individual, not group assignments; identical or similar papers will not be graded
                            Late report Penalty: 20points/week (10P/NP)

Attendance - 100 points
                            10 points/planetarium session, maximum 80; 20 points for class attendance with no more than
                            three unexcused absences. Must be in class when attendance is taken; late arrivers will not be counted
Mid-semester exams - 300 points
                            Exam 1 - 100 points
                            Exam 2 - 100+ points
                                              The higher of these will be doubled.
                            Finals - 300 points
                            Planetarium Exam - 100+ points
                            Course Final - 100 points
                                                    The higher of these will be doubled if the last class is attended, otherwise the lower will be doubled.
                            Bonus Points - up to 65 points

Final Grading Scale:  900 - up A
                                800 - 899 B
                                700 - 799 C
                                550 - 699 D

*10 points - Attend a public or school planetarium show at Lakeview Dec 8

20 points - Travel to the Sun and each of the nine planets in Peoria's community solar system model. Take a photograph of yourself with the planet. Can be done in groups but everyone receiving credit must be in the photograph. Hand in the set of 10 photos or photo CD. Dec. 3
