SOC 313 RACE, ETHNICITY, AND MINORITY RELATIONS

Course Syllabus

Goal of Course:

I identify with the statement made by the authors of a textbook whose goal was (and here I am slightly modifying their statement) "to introduce students to majority-minority relations for a better understanding of the social world and a greater ability to act as members of that world."

Examinations:

There will be three examinations (non-cumulative). The exams will consist of a combination of multiple-choice and essay questions. Answers which indicate memorization rather than the understanding of the material will not be acceptable (you will get zero points).

The letter grades will be given according to the following scale:

Percentage/Grade: 90-100 A ; 80-89 B ; 70-79 C ; 60-69 D ; 59 or less F

The instructor reserves the right to assign differential weights to the different exams (to be done in consultation with students). It is most likely that all three grades will have a nearly equal weight. The instructor reserves the right to determine the seating arrangements during examinations.

Attendance:

An attendance sheet will be passed around at each session. Students are encouraged and advised to attend all the classes for the following reasons:

In light of the above, students interested in benefiting from the course and/or increasing the chances of getting a good grade are strongly urged to attend systematically.

Comment: While this course might not be the most difficult one that you will encounter in college, it is not an easy one. We will cover a lot of ground, both in terms of information and theory. I suggest you take it most seriously from day one. Study the material systematically; I urge you not to cram a day before the tests. Don't hesitate to call me -- I do have the time for you.
