Bradley University saxophone professor Keith M. Zimmerman will present a free faculty recital on Sunday, September 13, at 3 p.m. in the Dingeldine Music Center, located at 1417 W. Barker Avenue. Joining him will be pianist Andrea Molina, a former Bradley faculty member.
The program will consist of a transcription for soprano saxophone of Handel’s Third Violin Sonata and one of the earliest soprano saxophone pieces, the Fantaisie of Jean-Baptiste Singelee written in 1863. With alto saxophone and piano Zimmerman and Molina will present Paul Creston’s Sonata, one of the masterworks of the literature; British composer Ronald Binge’s Romance; and French composer Pierre Sancan’s Lamento et Rondo which was the exam piece for the Paris National Conservatory in 1973 when Zimmerman won his study certificate there as a foreigner. The largest piece on the program will be Henri Tomasi’s Ballade for orchestra but in piano reduction by the composer. It is of a concerto like nature but tells the story of a despondent clown and his mood swings. Zimmerman will conclude in his usual way with 1920’s phenomenon Rudy Wiedoeft’s Sax-o-phun.
Zimmerman has been at Bradley for 16 years as saxophone and saxophone ensemble teacher and formerly taught saxophone at Illinois Wesleyan University. He has worked as a public school band director, lead saxophonist for Ringling Bros. Circus, is an artist/clinician for Paris Selmer Saxophones and Eugene Rousseau mouthpieces, and is the leader of the Illinois Saxophone Quintet which has been in existence since 1972.
