Eating Disorders Awareness Walk on Campus

For the first time ever, the National Eating Disorder Association is bringing an awareness walk to Peoria. The Body Project at Bradley University will host the event on April 9.

The purpose of the walk is to spread awareness about the seriousness of eating disorders, celebrate survivors and give hope to those who are still struggling with an eating disorder.  More than 30 million people in the U.S. suffer from a clinically significant eating disorder at some point in their lives–20 million women and 10 million men.

The walk begins and ends at the Markin Family Recreation Center on campus at 9 a.m. Registration and check-in begin at 8:30. Registration for students is $15; non-students register for $25. All participants will receive a T-shirt, a bag with information and a memento of the event.  Registration is available on-line at http://www.nedawalk.org/ until 2 p.m. on April 8.

The best known contributor to developing anorexia and bulimia is body dissatisfaction. For girls, body dissatisfaction starts to show up as early as age 6 and up to 60% of all elementary school girls, age 6-12 express concerns about their weight.
