Students Publish Board Game

October 3, 2016

A team of Game Design students at Bradley University will soon publish their own board game, Dark is the Night, with board and card game publisher APE Games.

Dark is the Night is a two-player tabletop game in which one player is a hunter and the other is a monster. The object of the game is to navigate the board and eliminate the other player before time runs out.

Junior Game Design majors Zachary Abbott (Park Forest, IL - Rich East High School), Arwen Boyer (Morton, IL - Morton High School), and Joshua Estill (Miami, Florida - Felix Varela Senior High School) began designing the game during their sophomore year as part of their Game Design 1 class. They submitted the game to a contest at SaltCon, a board game convention in Utah. Although they didn’t place, they caught the attention of Kevin Brusky, founder and President of APE Games.

“He first contacted us about sending him a copy of the game as well as potential changes we could make to the game's mechanics,” said Boyer. “After some back-and-forth discussion and iteration, Kevin generously offered us a publishing contract.”

The design team is currently making final tweaks to the game’s design to prepare for the final version. APE Games will initiate a Kickstarter campaign in order to fund its initial production. Once it is successful, actual manufacturing will begin. The team hopes to see the finished product on shelves in early 2017.
