Using Internet2 In the Classroom
Overview
As many of you are aware, Bradley University is fortunate to be among
the universities with Internet 2 (I2) connectivity. Having this capability
means that we are able to transmit and receive much more data in a shorter
time than is possible through regular Internet connections. For researchers
this means that data sharing of very large amounts of information is possible
between sites. For teachers, I2 expands greatly the size of our classrooms.
To support Bradley faculty willing to explore new teaching possibilities
or scholarship projects, OTEFD is funding proposals where faculty will
pilot methods of integrating the use of I2 into new or existing courses
or into their research or creative productions. The primary criterion
used to assess proposals will be the creative/effective use of this technology
to provide students learning opportunities not possible without the use
of this new connectivity or to advance scholarship. These projects may
use I2 only on a couple of times during the semester or you may propose
more frequent use.
As you ponder how you might become involved, consider these
questions:
If my students and I could
go on a trip…
- Where could we do something that we can't do on campus?
- Who could we meet with that we couldn't speak to easily in Peoria?
- What could we see that we can't see at Bradley University?
- Who do I know that would help my students better understand...?
If you have answers for any of these questions, then Intenet2 may be
the way to move the wish for your students to have opportunities elsewhere
into realities planned for your courses. You may well want to consider
submitting a proposal.
Support
This pilot project will support 10 proposals during the academic year.
Each proposal will be funded for up to $1000 - of which $500 may be for
faculty honorarium. Faculty members will agree to participate in two -
three discussion sessions during the Fall semester to share experiences.
Proposal Requirements
Proposals for this project should include the following:
1) Completed grant application form (Download
by clicking here)
2) A brief description of the nature and purpose of the connection(s).
3) Explanation if I2 capabilities at other site(s) and confirmation
that the other site(s) is able to manage the costs and logistics associated
with their participation.
4) Identification of the number of times you would anticipate using
the I2 connection.
5) Details regarding how you will assess the benefits of this new learning
opportunity for your students or to your scholarship.
*your complete proposal package should be emailed to otefd@bradley.edu,
attaching all required forms to the email.
Deadline
All materials should be electronically submitted to The Office of Teaching
Excellence and Faculty Development at otefd@bradley.edu. These grants
have open enrollment and are accepted throughout the year as long as funds
are available.
Note: Your answers may still be a bit sketchy. If needed, the OTEFD directors
will work with good concepts and help you develop your ideas further.
