Special EmphasisResources & Information *Special Note* Student Undergraduate Research Funds (SURF) are now funded through Special Emphasis. To apply for these funds, simply follow the proposal guidelines for Special Emphasis. Special Emphasis Application Form (click to dowload) The University’s NCA approved special emphasis project of engaging students with faculty has been on going for a number of years but without widespread participation. In order to facilitate the special emphasis, several years ago the Provost made available, through OTEFD, monies to support student-faculty engagement activities. Once again, OTEFD has received monies from the Provost to assist in this effort. Last spring Provost Etaugh and Dean Bolla began a reevaluation of the internal funding process with the hope of substantially increasing funding requests. With the help of the University’s Undergraduate Research Committee and the Directors of REC, TEC and Special Emphasis, the fundable activities have been expanded and the proposal submission process has been streamlined. Beginning immediately, an assessment Committee consisting of the Coordinators of REC, TEC, Special Emphasis, and the Undergraduate Research Committee will serve as an executive board to oversee and make recommendations on the funding of undergraduate engagement projects. The Committee will be chaired by the Associate Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, who will have responsibility for the associated budgets. Although many of the Special Emphasis projects are likely to involve undergraduate research, they are not restricted to only this type of engagement. Previously, two types of Special Emphasis proposals were solicited: 1) Student Engagement in Courses, and 2) Student Engagement in Research, Creative Production, and Service. This year these categories have been merged; the key to this RFP is the shared nature of the proposed engagement between the faculty and students. The proposal must demonstrate that the student(s) will make a significant intellectual contribution to the project and will gain positive intellectual growth as a result of the engagement. Should you need additional information or assistance with the application process, contact Dr. Kelly McConnaughay (ext: 3018; kdm@bradley.edu), Interim Director of the Office for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development. The proposal, developed by the faculty/student collaborators, should be submitted electronically kdm@bradley.edu. The University’s Undergraduate Research Committee will review proposals, on a rolling basis, and in an expeditious manner.
