Dr. Bolla received his doctorate in biochemical and molecular parasitology from the University of Massachusetts. He has held research fellowships at the University of Notre Dame and the Roche Institute of Molecular Biology. His academic career began at the University of Missouri St. Louis where he developed teaching and research interests in the molecular biology of pathogenesis of parasitic organisms of veterinary and agricultural importance. Dr. Bolla also has held an adjunct visiting professor appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Washington University St. Louis and did research at the Forestry Research Institute in Tsukuba Japan as a Distinguished Foreign Scientist sponsored by the Japan Society for the Advancement of Science. In 1989 Dr. Bolla joined the faculty of St Louis University as Professor and Chair of the Department of Biology where he also held an adjunct appointment as Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the St. Louis University School of Medicine and as a research associate at the Missouri Botanical Garden. At St. Louis University, Dr. Bolla taught biochemistry and taught in the honors program and research ethics program and participated in the "Ethics across the Curriculum" program while continuing his research program. Dr. Bolla moved to Youngstown State University in 2001 as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences where he led the development of an early college high school with funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. In 2005, Dr. Bolla moved to Bradley University as Associate Provost for Research and Dean of the Graduate School.

Dr. Bolla is the founding partner of NFD LLC an agricultural biotech consulting company and Shovler LLC, an agricultural crop products use development company. Dr. Bolla has over 100 research publications including publications on scientific ethics. He is a member of the Society of Nematologists of which he has served as President, the European Society of Nematologists of which he has been on the Board of Governors and serves as a reviewer for the Journal Nematology, the Japanese Society of Nematologists of which he is a member of the editorial board, the Society of Research Administrators for whom he teaches in the areas of intellectual property and research ethics, the American Microbiological Society, the New York Academy of Science, the St. Louis Academy of Science, Council of Graduate Schools and AAAS. He has presented to the Council of Graduate Schools on the Organization and Administration of Graduate Schools in Comprehensive Universities and on the Responsible Conduct of Research.
