Summer enrichment program for high school students offered

Peoria, Illinois -- February 7, 2003 -- Bradley University will offer a variety of weeklong program opportunities this summer to a limited number of high school juniors and seniors. Programs in nursing, physical therapy and teaching will be offered from June 15 through 21.

The summer enrichment program is designed to acquaint students with the many aspects of a chosen profession through a variety of hands-on experiences while allowing them to experience college life.

Students will stay in a Bradley residence hall, where each room is equipped with a computer, and will participate in activities using Bradley's recreational facilities.

The nursing program will provide an opportunity to explore various nursing roles. Participants will observe and interact with nurses in practice settings such as critical care, rehabilitation, obstetrical, medical, surgical and mental health units. The Bradley nursing laboratory will be used to practice cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and nursing assessment techniques. Programs, tours and observations will be held in clinical facilities in the Peoria area.

The teaching program will allow participants to assist and observe in classes designed for students age five through twelve; explore potential careers in early childhood, elementary, special and secondary education; and participate in workshops focused on the teaching profession.

The program in physical therapy and health science will include an introduction to physical therapy and other health care career opportunities, interaction with physical therapists in a variety of real or mock practice environments, tours of several local health care facilities, and discussion of professional issues and research techniques.

The cost is $350 and includes all expenses for six nights lodging, meals, and program related costs. Applications will be accepted until June1. Complete details and a downloadable and printable version of the Summer Enrichment application form are available at http://www.bradley.edu/ccd/summerenrichment/.
