Dr. Goldberg to receive Lydia Moss Bradley Award
Peoria, Illinois ... October 2, 2003 ... Dr. Kalman Goldberg,
distinguished professor of economics, 1986 Illinois Professor
of the Year, and provost and vice president for academic
affairs, emeritus, will be awarded the 2003 Lydia Moss Bradley
Award during the Founder's Day luncheon in the Michel Student
Center ballroom at Bradley University on Friday, October 3.
Dr. Goldberg died in January of this year. His family will
accept the honor on his behalf.
The Lydia Moss Bradley Award honors outstanding service to
Bradley in the tradition of its founder. Mrs. Bradley's
vision in founding Bradley Polytechnic Institute was to shape
young people's lives and help them understand the value of an
education and the importance of hard work. She wanted them to
lead successful lives and was willing to dedicate both her
time and savings for that purpose.
Dr. Goldberg came to Bradley as an assistant professor of
economics in
1952. He was promoted to associate professor in 1956 and was
named head of the department in 1957. He served as director of
the Bradley Center for Economic Education for eight years, the
editor of The Journal of Economic Education from 1985 to 1989,
and associate editor of the Regional Science Perspectives
Journal. In 1986, he was selected Illinois Professor of the
Year by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education
(CASE) and was one of ten finalists for the 1986 National
Professor of the Year honor. He received the annual Putnam
Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1958, and in 1960 he
received a Ford Foundation Fellowship for study in economics
at the University of Michigan. He served as a consultant to
business, education, and government and has conducted research
and published books and articles on urban economics.
Dr. Goldberg's service to the University included a term as
chairman of the University Senate from 1977 to 1981. He also
was a key member of the University's Strategic Planning
Committee and was a member and chairman of most university and
College of Business Administration standing committees
throughout his fifty-year tenure. He served as faculty advisor
for the Student Senate, NAACP, and Hillel. Additionally, he
served as director and chief investigator of the USIA grants
with Samara State Aerospace University/International Market
Institute in Samara, Russia.
Dr. Goldberg was active in both professional and community
organizations, including the American, Midwest, and Illinois
Economic Associations, the American Association of University
Professors, the Regional Science Association, and the
Mid-Continent Regional Science Association. Locally, he served
on the boards of the Tri-County Urban League, the Peoria Area
Mental Health Clinic, and Youth Farm. He was involved in
numerous civic and religious organizations and was appointed
by Governor James Thompson to the Illinois Independent Higher
Education Loan Authority. In recognition of his service to
Bradley and to the Peoria community, Dr. Goldberg was awarded
the Francis C. Mergen Award for Community Service in 1994. He
received a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin, an M.A. from
the University of Pennsylvania, and a Ph.D. from Cornell
University.
