FASB chairman to give McCord Lecture

Edmund L. Jenkins, chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) will speak on "Global Financial Reporting Standards to Serve a Global Financial Market" as the Spring 1998 McCord Lecturer on Thursday, April 2. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held at noon in the Student Center Marty Theatre.

Prior to his appointment as chairman of the FASB in 1997, Mr. Jenkins was managing partner of the Professional Standards Group of Arthur Andersen LLP's worldwide practice. The Professional Standards Group represented Arthur Andersen before the FASB and federal regulators with respect to accounting, auditing, and financial reporting matters. During his 38-year career with the firm, he also served as managing partner of its accounting and audit practice, holding worldwide responsibility for the largest segment of the firm's professional practice. In that capacity, he was responsible for Arthur Andersen's practice before the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Before joining the FASB, he served as chairman of the Special Committee on Financial Reporting, constituted by the American Institute of CPAs, and referred to as the "Jenkins Committee." He also was a charter member of the FASB's Emerging Issues Task Force, serving from 1984 to 1991. He was a member of the FASB's Advisory Council from 1991 to 1995.

Mr. Jenkins holds a B.A. degree from Albion College and an M.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and several state societies of CPAs.

The McCord Lectureship was established by the officers and directors of Illinois Mutual Life and Casualty Company on July 31, 1990 in honor of Robert A. McCord upon his retirement as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of the company. The lectureship brings prominent business executives to campus to meet with student groups and business professionals from the community to discuss managerial and organizational applications.
