|
The Department of Biology is the first recipient of the William Rainey Harper Award for Departmental Excellence. The award recognizes an academic or support unit which has demonstrated commitment to excellence and an ever-improving level of performance. For more than 40 years, the Department of Biology has strived to foster students' independence and help them develop good scientific skills. The department, while emphasizing strong classroom and laboratory instruction, also has involved students in collaborative research with the faculty. The department has received nine grants from the National Science Foundation for improvement of undergraduate instruction and research. In 1989, the department initiated the Mentors Program, allowing approximately 20 freshmen to begin collaborative research

immediately and continue for four years. The program has been a model for several other departments at Bradley. The award is named for Dr. William Rainey Harper, who in 1896, urged Lydia Moss Bradley to found a school during her lifetime rather than through her will. Harper, who was president of the University of Chicago, also served as president of the faculty at Bradley Polytechnic Institute from 1897 to 1906. Presented triennially, the award carries a $50,000 stipend. The Harper Award is the third of three major awards announced in 1996 by President John R. Brazil, made possible by the Centennial Campaign. The first was the Theodore C. Burgess Award for Inter-departmental Cooperation, and the second was the Helen Bartlett Award for Excellence in Service to Students.
