[Convocation]

C ommencement Convocation in Bradley Chapel, April 20, 1943. The mural at the left is one of six that hung in the Chapel. They were painted by Bradley art students in 1940. Each measured six feet by nine feet. (Journal-Transcript photo.)


[House

H ouse "decs," or decorations, were a highlight of Homecoming for more than 30 years, beginning in the 1930's. Lines of cars would snake through campus on the Friday night of Homecoming to view the elaborate displays. The Chi Omegas took first place with their 1948 house dec featuring a working windmill. R egistration in the Field House, c. 1949. Note the sign for Bradley College, on the left. In 1950 Bradley College for men and Laura College for women were combined to form the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.


[fieldhouse]

B radley vs. Nebraska at the new field house, the third game of the 1949-50 season. The field house was dedicated to the memory of Coach Robertson at a basketball game on December 17, 1949. The 1949-50 basketball team was ranked first in the nation and went on to place second in both the N.I.T. and N.C.A.A. tournaments.


[Teepee

T he Teepee in 1950. The first floor, known as the Wigwam, was a cafeteria at the time.


[Passing

T he Passing of the Torch ceremony at Commencement 1953. The ceremony, in which the lights of learning and wisdom were passed from the senior class to the junior class, was a Commencement tradition from 1927 until the mid-1950's. Poetry for the occasion was written by Dr. Olive B. White in 1931.

T he marching band spelled out its support of the football team at Peoria Stadium in the fall of 1962.


[College

B radley team Captain Ed Wehrli receives the G.E. College Bowl trophy from host Robert Earl, November 15, 1969. Bradley students Ed Wehrli, Gene Sidler, Paul Remack, and Gary Roberts were undefeated champions of the nationally televised G.E. College Bowl that year. The silver bowl they received is displayed in Bradley Hall.


[Ivy

I vy reached to the top of the Bradley Hall tower before the plants were removed in 1985. Ivy planting had been a Commencement tradition in the early days; years later concerns were raised about its impact on the limestone and mortar.
