Gov. Quinn rallies for MAP grant

Students tell their stories

Jade Peters is a senior from Evergreen Park, IL, majoring in psychology with minors in decision analysis/quantitative methods and leadership studies. Below are her remarks from Thursday's rally.

School has always been my passion and I am saddened that this is my last year at Bradley.  I have had three years full of great opportunities and am truly grateful for the help and support from Bradley, the alumni, and the state of Illinois.  I am able to go to college because of generous help from many sources.

I come from a suburb just outside of Chicago and went through public school. My parents are not wealthy; for instance, they don't owned their own home. My father works extra hours to provide for our family, but my mother cannot work because of her health.  I work to pay for books and school.

I love Bradley and if you'll allow me to brag for a moment, I think I have done well here. I am president of Mortar Board, a member of Sigma Kappa, the Panhellenic Council, the Psi Chi Honor Society and others. I've done all that while keeping my grades high. I believe that I exemplify leadership and scholarship that Bradley is known for.

I had a plan to pay for this last year of school, but my grandmother recently passed away. She had helped me pay some of the tuition costs so I find myself in more financial need than ever. And now my MAP grant is being threatened. Without MAP, I will be unable to finish my last semester, unable to realize my dream of graduating from college.

I do not have any means to make up the difference if the MAP grant isn't renewed. I would be unable to finish school or get a job and give back to the state. Please help me and thousands of other students in Illinois fulfill their dreams.
