By Tahireh “Tara” Jabbari ’11

My goal for my visit to Dublin was to learn about and find out all the possibilities the Irish film industry has to offer. As an electronic media major with a goal of getting into film, I know that Ireland is growing bigger and becoming more popular for film and television.
At Temple Bar, the cultural center of the city, there are two film academies, the IFI (Irish Film Institute) academy and the Filmbase academy (which is the more popular). It offers summer classes on film production, directing, screenwriting, and more for two months with tuition ranging from 200 Euros to 1200. Both also offer job information and volunteer opportunities from acting to actual pre and postproduction.
The city of Dublin is a great source for experiencing the art of film and television making. It is also close enough to remote locations where popular shows, such as The Tudors, andfilms like Hunger are filmed. Its theater programs are also very much in demand, and the Gaiety School of Acting is a great option for theatre majors at Bradley.
In less than a week, I was given access to three different academies with great connections to production companies seeking fresh and eager students who want to work in a great and unique environment, most of which are on location and not in an indoor studio. Being able to travel with Bradley to learn travel writing has given me the opportunity to also learn about my career options outside of Bradley. It has allowed me to broaden my horizons and see that I can live and work or just volunteer for at least a few months in film or television, in production, or acting in Dublin and Ireland itself. I had many one-on-one talks with filmmakers, actors, and actresses at an audition for The Tudors. Internet research and classes helped my goal and helped me get started, but being in Dublin has helped bring everything full circle and made it whole.
