Who should attend?
International trade professionals in the ares of management, trade compliance, business development, contracts, international sales/marketing and shipping/logistics.
It is increasingly important employees in companies conducting international trade are fully knowledgeable on trade compliance issues. (See related article regarding increased penalties for non-compliance.) We are pleased to announce a full-day export compliance workshop in Peoria on May 12. The workshop features speakers presenting on the following topics:
Overview of the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) – Understanding US Export Controls:
Speaker: Lisa Victoria Waller, CHB, Vice President, BDG International, Inc., Elgin, IL
Understanding BIS regulations is the first step toward implementing an effective export compliance program. BIS essentially determines when an export license may be required. Discussions will also include ‘deemed exports’ in which even a conversation in your office with a potential international buyer could require prior BIS clearance.
BIS Office of Export Enforcement
Speaker: Bryan Pabin, Bureau of Industry and Security – Chicago, IL
This session discusses ways to ensure your company remains compliant with BIS regulations and understanding recording keeping guidelines.
Office of Foreign Asset Controls (OFAC) – Economic Sanctions
Speaker: Shari Stout, US Commercial Service, Peoria, IL
OFAC enforces U.S. sanctions which prohibit some or all exports to particular countries. It is important to understand OFAC regulations as in some instances products are allowed to be exported into countries that otherwise seem off-limits to U.S. companies.
International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) – Legal Implications
Speaker: Bart McMillan, Baker & McKenzie, Chicago, IL
ITAR is an important aspect of export compliance as companies that export technologies not directly related to military use may still fall under ITAR regulations.
Industry Panel: Company Perspective of Export Compliance and Best Practices
Moderator: Julie Hoeniges. Global Trade Compliance Manager, Caterpillar Inc., Peoria, IL
Panelists include: Dan Chevalier,
CHB, Trade Compliance Supervisor,
Gardner Denver, Inc.
This roundtable discussion looks at best practice in implementing an export compliance program. There are technology, training, recording keeping, and procedural implications to remain compliant – issue that can be challenging especially for smaller companies. This will highlight some case studies of how companies address these hurdles.
