Elevator Speech: A Short Verse to Start a Long Relationship
by Ross Miller, eBusiness Specialist
You meet someone on an elevator or at a networking event and they ask, "So, what does your company do?" You have about 10 seconds to capture their attention, GO!
Develop this long before you get into a situation that you need it. If you don't plan an elevator speech you will lose the opportunity, the elevator doors open and off the person goes.
Remember, tell them the benefits of working with your business rather than the features. A company doesn't sell drills, they provide construction workers services and options to deliver the equipment they need to build homes and commercial buildings.
What would be an elevator speech for the Turner Center for Entrepreneurship:
The Turner Center for Entrepreneurship at Bradley University's Foster College of Business Administration helps people in Central Illinois start successful businesses and helps existing businesses solve problems to continue their success. We focus on one-on-one counseling to provide specific answers to specific business questions our clients have.
See, it doesn't have to be fancy, just pique someone's interest enough to contact you later. All too often that chance meeting at a networking event results in a few business cards that will end up at the bottom of a desk drawer. This may actually differentiate your company enough to warrant a look at your web site.
