Music Scholarship Concert Series presents Callaloo

January 28, 2013

Peoria, IL (January 28, 2013) Callaloo, the best world fusion steel pan group performing original compositions, will perform as part of the Music Scholarship Concert Series at Bradley University on Sunday, February 10, at 3 p.m. in Dingeldine Music Center. Tickets are $5 for adults and will be available at the door.  Admission is free for students. Proceeds generate scholarship funds for Bradley music students.

Scott Johnson, the band’s co-founder and composer/arranger, began writing music for Callaloo that was built on strong, sophisticated Latin/Caribbean rhythms and recently began exploring and incorporating other styles, that, when fused, have proven to deliver a powerful musical experience. The percussion based group employs an amalgam of instruments – steel pan, marimba, ethnic percussion, drum set, nylon string guitar, electric and acoustic bass – while combining composed, orchestrated parts with improvisation. The percussionists switch instruments from song to song adding to the visual element of their performance.

Callaloo has endeavored to elevate the steel pan from its novelty status by using it as the primary melodic voice in a variety of settings. Callaloo labels themselves as artistic, inspirational entertainment.
