First Year:

  • Meet both your academic advisor AND pre-health advisor each semester
  • Begin taking required science courses and choose a major
  • Become active on campus - get involved!
  • Attend Health Professions Advising Center events and programs
  • Seek scholarships and honors
  • Get excellent grades in courses
  • Get volunteer experience and shadow professionals
  • Develop professional relationships with potential letter writers

Second Year:

  • Meet both your academic advisor AND pre-health advisor each semester
  • Attend Health Professions Advising Center events and programs
  • Become a leader
  • Explore alternative options and careers – Is this the right major and career goal for you?
  • Get information from professional schools and visit campuses
  • Become familiar with the entrance exam
  • Be aware of all entrance requirements for professional schools
  • Get excellent grades and honors
  • Get volunteer experience and shadow professionals
  • Get a summer internship and/or research experience
  • Develop professional relationships with potential letter writers

Third Year:

  • Reality check - What are your chances?  When will you apply and matriculate?
  • Meet both your academic advisor AND pre-health advisor each semester
  • Attend Health Professions Advising Center events and programs
  • Prepare for and take entrance exam (Spring)
  • Get excellent grades and honors
  • Become familiar with application service
  • Get research experience and/or internship
  • Get volunteer experience and shadow professionals
  • Ask for letters of recommendation
  • Prepare your personal statement

Summer after Third Year:

  • Submit applications to professional schools!

Fourth Year (Application year):

  • Meet both your academic advisor AND pre-health advisor each semester
  • Complete remaining pre-requisites & coursework for graduation requirements
  • Complete secondary applications if required
  • Prepare for and travel to interviews
  • Manage acceptances & make plans for financing your education
  • Or manage rejections - meet with Dr. Val to develop strategies for re-applying or consider alternative career goals
