Another Small Business Government Contracting Success Story

By Linda Krendick, Director, Illinois Procurement Technical Assistance Center

Ron’s Carpets has been located at 1003 NE Adams in Peoria, Illinois for over 20 years. They provide premier floor covering including carpeting, ceramic, laminate, natural stone, tile, and wood. The business was originally started by Ron and Carol Hayse. In 1997, due to the sudden death of Ron, Carol had to make a decision to continue the family operation or not. Ron had told Carol his wishes were for her to continue the business and she could do it! With that reassurance, Carol went on to grow the company.

Carol Hayse became a IL PTAC client in October 2007. Carol is now a successful government and large business supplier. Her customer base includes builders, educational institutions, government buildings, restaurants, hotels, office complexes, houses of worship, and residential. The IL PTAC resource center has sponsored many workshops and events. Carol networks and gains knowledge about local procurement opportunities at many of these events.

In 2008, Carol was introduced to a large business at an IL PTAC sponsored event. Within one year from that initial connection to a large business, Ron’s Carpets received a business contract. To this day they remain a vendor to that same business. Since 2007, Ron’s has received contracts from over 100 government agencies and large businesses. Carol was prepared with certification as a small women owned business, and she has been able to leverage that status to win contracts. The secret to success for Carol and her team has been their history of past performance with a reliable commercial product, excellent delivery, and extensive knowledge of their products. Combined with her leadership, Carol’s business continues to grow.
