Finance student Tyler Beason to Pursue PhD

By Brandon Wallace '17

After a busy but rewarding Hilltop experience, quantitative finance graduate student Tyler Beason ’15 will pursue a doctorate in finance at Arizona State University’s W.P. Carey School of Business.

The Mattoon, Illinois, native credited numerous growth opportunities for preparing him for the next step.

“I've been fortunate enough to lead student organizations, help during visit days and sit on faculty committees,” Beason said. “I think students can learn something from all of these activities, even if it doesn't appear to be directly related to what they see themselves doing in the future.”

He also won several awards for research at the annual Student Scholarship Expo and interned with RLI and Bosch. These, in addition to classroom discussion, taught the value of constantly asking “Why?”

“Every professor stressed that question,” Beason said. “I feel that I’ve been trained to seek the root causes of behaviors, which is a critical skill for researchers.”

He offered several tips to students who follow his footsteps:

“I think there are three key pillars to a solid undergraduate education,” Beason said. “They are good grades, involvement in extracurricular activities and a study abroad experience. If a student works to reach those three goals, they are set for success.”
