OLLI Learning Trips Chair

Dave Allan

I grew up in New Athens, Illinois, home of Whitey Hertzog.  I earned a BS in mechanical engineering degree from the University of Missouri-Rolla (Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity), and retired from Caterpillar Inc. after 42+ tears of service, with the majority of that time working in international marketing (focus on Latin America and lived in Mexico for 3 years).  I’ve been married for 33 years to Marian “Queenie,” a retired elementary school administrator.  We don’t have any children, but have many nieces and nephews.

I first became involved with OLLI at the recommendation of a friend, Greg Peine.  My first impression of OLLI was its interesting cast of characters from all walks of life – we all have a wide variety of experience!  What surprised me the most was the inquisitive nature of the members – nobody falls asleep in our classes!

I’d love for other people to know that OLLI can be a new life after retirement; one that can provide a tremendous amount of fun and satisfaction!  I’ve met some great people at OLLI, and the most interesting one would have to be Peggy Cornelius.  It’s also great to connect with other Caterpillar retirees – some that I have known over the years and others I’d never met.

OLLI is truly an opportunity of a lifetime.  Where else do you have a chance to go back to school, learn something new, and not have to take any tests?  More and more people are reaching the retirement age and are ready to get on with their lives – at OLLI they can learn new and interesting things and meet new and interesting people!  If someone is thinking about attending OLLI, I’d say, “Get off the couch and Just Do It!”

When I retired, I wanted to get involved and volunteer somewhere.  I just never would have thought it would be through OLLI.  It is strange where life leads you.
