The philosophy curriculum fosters both a broad understanding of the historical development of the discipline as well as an in-depth familiarity of particular movements and texts within the Western tradition. Our program has particular strengths in the history of philosophy as well as in recent Continental philosophy. Because courses within the philosophy major tend to be very small, philosophy professors work closely with each of their students, minding carefully their interests and needs, and monitoring their intellectual progress. Mentoring is something that the department takes very seriously. The philosophy major and minor programs are both suited, in terms of requirement load and disciplinary complementarity, to be studied alongside other majors and minors. The philosophy program strongly encourages students to build a general cultural background as well as to study at least one foreign language.
