The Degree
Bradley’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts in Retail Merchandising. Students are required to complete a minor in either Marketing or Business Management. The purpose of the program is to prepare graduates for careers in buying, sales and related areas in the fashion industry. The Retail Merchandising curriculum includes core courses in the history and philosophy of Family and Consumer Sciences along with specialized courses in Retail Merchandising. These areas include:

  • apparel analysis
  • consumer behavior
  • fashion merchandising
  • textiles
  • product development
  • visual merchandising

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences chooses two freshmen each year to be either the “Mildred Arnold Scholar” or the “C.C. Wheeler Scholar.” These $4,000 scholarships are renewed annually for up to four years providing the student maintains a minimum GPA of 3.0 and completes the scholarship requirements.

Opportunities at Bradley
Students interact closely with faculty and gain experience through relevant research projects and participate in an annual student research and creative achievement exhibition. Outside the classroom, Retail Merchandising majors participate in cocurricular and cooperative learning experiences including:

  • Off-site study in Europe, Chicago and New York
  • Bradley University Fashion Focus organization
  • Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society
  • Experiential learning in the fashion industry

Beyond Bradley
Bradley Retail Merchandising graduates enjoy an excellent placement rate. Bradley alumni have pursued careers such as:

  • interior stylist in the visual merchandising/display department of Nordstrom
  • merchandise manager for a Disney resort
  • planning manager for Crate and Barrel corporate headquarters
  • brand specialist for Nike corporate headquarters
  • business analyst for Marshall Field’s
  • children’s department buyer for Von Maur
