The Degree
Bradley’s Department of Music offers an undergraduate curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Music in Education. Music at Bradley involves a combination of technology and tradition to prepare students for careers as teachers, composers, performers or executives in the music industry. All applicants audition to gain entrance into the program. The audition is required both to determine acceptance into a degree program and for consideration of talent scholarships. Music students who wish to teach in public schools complete this degree with a major in Music Education and the requirements for teacher licensure. A Teacher Education degree from Bradley is designed to meet State of Illinois requirements and is accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). In addition, Bradley has gained accreditation from the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The music program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). In January 2001, the Music Department was honored with Bradley’s prestigious Helen Bartlett Award for Excellence in Service to Students.

The Department of Music offers a number of scholarships, grants, and awards designated for incoming students who choose to major in music. Talent awards range from $100 to $4,000 and are allocated by the Department of Music through the audition process. Students who receive these awards must remain music majors, maintain a specified GPA and participate in a major performing ensemble each semester.

Students are assigned advisors both in Music and in Teacher Education. In conjunction with the Department of Teacher Education, students participate in a variety of classroom settings including a field experience, novice teaching and student teaching. Students in Bradley’s Music Education program work directly with faculty. In addition, faculty members bring nationally recognized leaders in the industry to share their experiences and offer assistance to students on a regular basis.
