Achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals through the Power of Education

With environment, social, and economic crises all around us, it is essential to find hope in the power of education for sustainable development (ESD). As a “driver” for the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), education offers solutions across all sectors and disciplines.

Dr. Kim Smith will guide a review of historical and current initiatives and highlight the new skillsets we will all need for a sustainable future. By reflecting on the value of ESD and exploring the SDGs, participants will have the opportunity to unpack the "ESD for 2030 Toolbox" and identify how education can increase our collective impact. Dr. Smith is a sociology instructor at Portland Community College as well as the Higher Education Envoy for UN University and US Partnership for Education for Sustainable Development.

This event is sponsored by the Office of Global Studies and Initiatives and the Center for STEM Education.
